Return of Baal

In the autumn of 4E 1253 in the land of Dythos a plot was discovered to resurrect the demon Mithradeth. Various sectarian groups were vying for political power and the nation was extremely divided. Members of a group named the “Pact of Dissension” had infiltrated both of the major factions and planned to summon the ancient enemy in hopes of political favor after he had calmed the near-civil war. Several powerful artifacts were necessary to complete the resurrection, but heroes wielding divine weapons known as the “Vestiges of the Dawn” were able to thwart the cult's schemes. In the spring of 4E 1254 they gathered the items in the safest vault in the land- a set of caves known as the “Fires of Baal”.

Tragically the vault itself was possessed by Mithradeth's elder brother, Baal, who was able to take physical form using the items he had manipulated both sides into thinking were necessary for his sibling's return. The Fortress Lamerys, seat of the Dythonian Sovereign's power, was occupied by a hellish horde of monsters and possessed men. The same heroes that thwarted the Pact of Dissension worked together with the various military commanders of Dythos to not only retake the fortress but reach the cracked tower that Baal had taken as his throne. Though he wrought much destruction, with the aid of their holy artifacts the heroes slew Baal atop his tower.

The event caused a massive change in the political landscape of Dythos, as opposed factions had been forced to unify against the demonic threat. This unity, though it would quickly be forgotten, would not completely die. A seed of peace had been planted, and it's roots ran deep. The heroes of the day disappeared mysterious a few weeks after the battle, and it would be some time before they were seen again.
