Romalia, or Greater Malia, is an expansive region of northern Centras mostly keeping with the malian cultural boundaries of the ancient Romalian Empire. While the empire was one of the primary battlegrounds of the Elesh Rebellion and was destroyed centuries ago, most of the local and regional powers claim some legitimacy through ties to the old empire, and more than a few harbor a dream of re-unifying the empire under their rule.

Geography

While the core provinces of ancient Romalia originally contained diverse and rich lands, the cataclysm suffered during the Great War has left the region deeply scarred and twisted. Tranquil forests are now dark and full of horrors. Hill land vineyards not abandoned yield only bitter fruit. The seasons are unpredictable - ice storms ruin summer harvests and flowers mistakenly bloom underneath winter's snow. Even centuries removed from the calamity, storms of unnatural phenomenon and curses roam the region.

Horned Mountains

Ashen Strand

Once known as the Alabaster Strand, the narrow coast-lands around the old trade cities of the northern coast (including the jewel of Malia itself) were some of the wealthiest in the world, renowned for their white sandy shores and deep harbors. While many of the old cities, including Malia, cling to the pride of their former glory, their harbors are now filled with petrified shipwrecks and their sands mixed with the soot and blood from the chaos of their sackings.

Ghostlands

The fertile heartland of old Malia was the site of some of the fiercest fighting of the Great War, and even centuries later the area struggles to heal. Untold multitudes are buried in its fields, which most now lie fallow and marshy. Locals tell of the sounds of galloping battle cries and clashing armies heard on the night wind, and the whispers of now-pointless causes that tempt young men to wander into the swamps and join the countless dead even today.

Domina Highlands

Set in the eastern interior, the Domina Highlands were once known as the Virgin Mountains, and were the largest border obstacle between the prosperity of the Alabaster Strand and the inland provinces. During the Great War the mountains were thrown down in a single day by an angel of womanly visage, known to legend only as the Domina. After her battle she left a land of sharp canyons, waterfall-filled valleys, and fragile misshapen peaks. Young forests and fertile pastures are plentiful, and the valleys sustain good vineyards and orchards. While the region shares in the wounds left behind by the 3rd Age, it is here that the largest and strongest Romalian communities have come to dominate the region.

Burnished Wood

These vast wooded hills dominate the north-west of Romalia and act as a natural border to Cisosgalia. While not untouched by the Great War, the land escaped the worst of the cataclysm and offers a measure of safety, however meager. The forest is good for hunting, but is too wooded with large pine and fir trees to grow much grain.

Argent Rise/Argent Refuge

A southern branch of the Horned Mountains, the peaks of the Argent Rise are locked in perpetual winter. Some say this is a wound of the Great War, but others claim the snows come from the magic of the Tor King and his hidden Anthegals. The mountains themselves are utterly inhospitable and inhabited mainly by rugged mountain tribes, but the high fields surrounding seem, known as the Argent Refuge, seem to be affected less by cataclysmic blight and reliably produce harvests of grain.

Steeple Barrens

A vast area arcing from the western edge of the Domina Highlands north to the Burnished Wood, and leading into the Ghostlands, the Steeple Barrens are the remains of the once-prosperous northern interior of old Romalia. Many of the provinces that now make up the barrens were the cultural hub of inland Malia and often regional rivals to the Alabaster Strand. Since the destruction brought by the Great War, however, the lands are desolate and ruined. Mostly rocky foothills and sickly forests, the landscape is dominated by the numerous remains of long-destroyed cities. The region gets its name from its many decaying mansions, which in previous times often featured lofty decorative towers, and which now sit in disrepair in the 'land of a thousand leaning towers.'
