Commonwealth City

Created as a special neutral district first by the Salem Alliance, and re-affirmed its special status in the Saquaford Compact afterwards, Commonwealth City is a city-state that sprawls over a large bay in the main southern continent of Salem. It acts as the capitol city of both the planet and the Saquaford Commonwealth, and is legally barred from officially owning any territory outside its contiguous urban districts. Commonwealth City is also the Imperial seat of power for the Saquaford Subsector.

The city is divided vertically into the Old City - which contains compact-era architecture and buildings, and the Imperial District (renamed from the Republic District) - which contains newer and more cosmopolitan buildings. The Imperial District sits above the Old City via an artificial city surface some 300 meters in the air that itself is about 50 meters thick and contains much of the infrastructure to serve both halves of the city. Ports and garages line the outer edge of this structure (sometimes just called “The Belt”) to provide easy trade and efficient travel to the entire city.
