Early morning explosions rocked the quiet moon of Kalais (Halix 14) today, where a magrail station was attacked by a heavily armed militia. Members of the “Free Kalasian Army” claimed responsibility just minutes after destroying a train carrying Titan aid to the Nordis city of Erlendom. Casualty numbers are currently at 390 dead, with over 100 million IC of economic assistance lost.
Eyewitnesses reported a sudden pre-planetrise barrage as the train was unloading, followed by an intense firefight that lasted almost 10 minutes. Nearly a dozen mechs were used to assault the station and Republican Guard garrisoned at the station were initially overwhelemed. After regrouping Nordis security forces blunted the FKA assault and they retreated, but not before destroying the train and disabling the regional magrail system. Halix networks were soon filled with images of the carnage, including one widely-circulated video of the station control tower being hit by a particle beam weapon as the staff attempted to flee. Memorial services are still being planned and will be announced shortly.
The FKA's fourth attack this year, it is the first that has targeted Titan aid. A Nordis spokesperson said the separatist group has a radical agrarian and anti-technology agenda, speculating the train's destruction was meant to be a symbolic attack against the industrialization and progress of the republic. The spokesperson refused to comment on a rumored link between the FKA and Sanctuary.
Foreign Minister Gaien issued a statement condemning the attack, saying “Halix is a valuable sphere full of rich history, and our trade partners there should rest easy knowing the security and resolve of the Empire is unbended by such barbaric acts. This will only cause us to redouble our efforts to protect all humankind in the Outer Sphere.”
