 Catanabara is a tidally locked terrestrial planet with ever-accelerating winds covering 98% of the surface, shredding any ships that enter the atmosphere. An ancient set of walls of unknown origin cancel all winds within an 'island' centered on the southern pole and covering around ten thousand square kilometers. The wind cancellation extends vertically all the way to the edge of the atmosphere. Without wind or precipitation the island feature dust-covered razor sharp mountains untouched by erosion. Because of the tidal lock half the island is in perpetual dark and half in perpetual light. A small twilight zone produces a narrow strip of temperate climate and meager vegetation.

Many ideas have been posited to explain the site, both mundane and fantastical. One such popular legend is that an advanced prehistoric race hid a vast treasure in the wastelands, leaving the island as the keyhole to open the lock with. The primary academic theory is that the ancient race built the walls as a precursor to further terraforming and colonization, but abandoned the project.
 Two native species occupy the island. The Qi'an live on the day side - stout humanoids with mocha skin and translucent ultraviolet irises and hair. They live in cliffside dwellings and use internal irrigation to cool buildings. The Kaji'vana live on the dark side - short lanky quadrupedal lizard people that live in underground nests and use geothermal vents for heat.
