Republic of Agathos

Though the roots of the Republic go back into pre-history, the modern form was founded in AE74 with the union of Agathos and Filos into a federal republic. It has since grown to include the ethnic territories of Vernick and Pyrkagia and is the largest, richest, and most populous nation in Polus. Considered one of the world's few superpowers, it was the main organizer behind the Free Peoples Alliance , and projects its military power across the globe. It is considered by many to be an equal rival to the USC, though only if the many nations allied to it are supporting it.

Through global conflict and civil war the republic collapsed quickly along ethnic lines in AE 239. While several groups claimed the mantle of the “Republic of Agathos” during the conflict, a true successor state would not emerge for several years until the United Free People's Federation pacified it's last wayward faction.

Geography

Agathos, with its large landmass, has the most diverse environments of any of the nations of Polus. Land features vary greatly from region to region, but tend to center around the various ethnic regions that now belong to the republic.

Northwestern Agathos is dominated by the Agalos Megalopolis, but still displays a rich variety of forests and wooded highlands. The northwestern coast is also known for its stunning cliffs and other interesting rock formations.

The southwest has some of the finest beaches on the continent. Beyond them are rolling plains with small forests that stretch on until the Glass Desert.

Filonian ethnic lands are characterized by wide, flat plains broken only by occasional buttes and pit quarries. This area is also known for high winds coming off of Lake Agalos.

South-central Agathos is known for lowlands, swamps, and the Glass Desert. Dryer areas dominate the eastern segments, while further toward the Umere border are vast glades and bogs.

Vernick lands are primarly made up of the Dunal Mountains and the adjacent sprawling foothills. The mountiain ranges climb in elevation until the Drakontas border.

Origin

The Republic of Agathos has its origins in pre-history. Numerous historical references to the republic can be found dated several centuries before the beginning of the AE timeline. Questions still remain about the nature of the republic before modern times, but it is claimed by historians at the time that Agathos weathered those tumultuous times better than most countries. The main cause claimed by sources at the time is the introduction of the Spiritual Renewal Assembly.

Kayne Reformation

In AE31 Phylin Kayne published his Universal Element Theory, which was hugely controversial and seen by many to be a disruptive threat to stability. Kayne was indicted by the Spiritual Inquisition, the enforcement arm of the Spiritual Renewal Assembly, and was forced to flee to Filos. There he began his reformation of the academic and religious organizations of the Arthenian world. Following a long diplomatic standoff between the Assembly and the king of Filos to seek Kayne's extradition, the Asssembly convinced the Senate to declare war on Filos. A swift and brutal invasion began, one which ended with Kayne moving back to Agathos - but not before the entire Ryal family line was ended. Kayne's reformation grew into a full on rebellion against the Senate that lasted until AE40, when he captured Agalos and accepted the Senate's surrender. Rather than become a tyrant he forced the Senate to sign the Reformed Constitution.

Government

The Republic of Agathos is a constitutional federal republic of 12 provinces with a strong central government. The modern government uses the Eagle Union Constitution that was created in AE82 with the addition of Vernick territories. It specifies three branches of government at the federal level, and lays out the basic interaction between it and the provincial governments.

The first and oldest branch of government is the Senate. It is a bicameral legislature that is in session 9 months out of the year. <TODO>

Since the Reformed Constitution of AE40 the second branch of government has been the Presidency. It is primarily charged with national defense and keeping the Senate's power in check. It has the power to veto and amend laws passed by the Senate, organize an army, and call for special elections for legislators indicted of crimes. The president serves for a single 6 years term and cannot serve consecutive terms. He is elected by a national election in which the winner of the most provinces' popular votes wins. In this election there can be 1 candidate from each party for each province, which is usually determined by regional elections months before the national election.

S Program

Among the normal forces the FDC also has the S Program. This program was implemented in secret and only those of the highest security class know of it. It was designed to search for Shape Shifters that were about to be born and have them be taken in by the government for training.

These soldiers would be trained from the first day to replace officials and politicians of other governments perfectly. they would be trained in several languages and habits of important peoples. They would take the place of these people for weeks, months, even years at a time. They would be given no name, only a designation.

The S Soldiers would also be trained to be masters of other crafts such as stealth, marksmanship, and hacking. They would master one other task other than the infiltration rather than several other skills to make sure they would be the best of that and could always fall back on it.

To this day the program has had no leaks or defectors. The S Soldiers have undying loyalty due to being trained from the very day of birth.
