Panphilopticy

Panphilopticy was the majority religion on Illusa during the Pashalik Entail. Broadly speaking it centered around the veneration of philosophers, who through various means had achieved special insight into the Truth and could make sacrifices to the gods on behalf of the community.

Beginning in 10,118 AG, the Anstarian schism was a reaction to the early rise of Maranatha practitioners and their refusal to participate in the family sacrifices. A movement, formed initially from the ranks of novices at first, rallied for reforms but were met by harsh sanctions by their superiors. This led to increasing waves of radicalism and reaction within the halls of the Philosopher Schools, and ultimately culminated in the Philosopher War.

After the Philosoper war the schism solidified into three main sects.

Material Panphilopticists, or materialists, interpreted the Philosopher War and its aftermath as a result of mere material corruption of the Philosopher system, but the war did not invalidate the spiritual insights of the religion itself. Ironically, most materialist practitioners saw personal deep spiritual experiences as the best way to renew the religion to its former ubiquity. Materialism was popular with the ruling and middles classes, but only found limited favor in the masses. This was the cause of simmering friction between them and Reformists - Materialists were careful to emphasis personal sacrifices and publicly tout that community sacrifices were fluid and should be locally decided.

A direct descendent of the Anstarians, Reformed Panphilopticy taught that a return to basics of Philosophy both spiritually and organizationally. Reformists rejected the need for community sacrifices completely, and rejected the need for enlightened Philosophers. Many taught explicit secularism, though a plurality held that communal spiritual knowledge should trump enlightened leadership.

Traditionalists were those opposed to the Anstarians, and taught that the Philosophers role as enlightened theocrats should be restored.
