Dythos

Taken from the colloquial name for north west coast of Centras given by agothonian explorers early in the second age, Dythos also refers broadly to a confederation of loosely bound colonies and homesteads in the region. While officially each entity must be chartered by and swear allegiance to a parent polis in mainland Agothos, practical realities mean that locales are self-governing and are often more loyal to regional allies than their parent. Given the vast number of colonies and their growing economic power, calls have been made to incorporate the region as a formal province of the republic, but the senate in Agolos has held no formal discussions of the matter. Within the colonies themselves integration into the republic is a mixed affair; for a variety of reasons many cherish their autonomy, and the vast distances involved would at minimum present logistical issues for providing senators to the mainland. Dythonians share Agothonian citizenship and culture, but tend to focus additionally on frontier spirit, self-sufficiency, and staunch individualism. Many on both sides of the ocean see Dythos as an important piece of the larger Agothonian destiny to spread liberty and prosperity - Agothos in Polus and Dythos in Centras.

With broader participation in local politics than the mainland, Dythos is known for an extremely passionate political system. Throughout political shifts and turmoil, a near-constant fixture were the sectarian divisions between the Blues and Whites. Beginning as local political parties, the Blue and White factions soon become vehicles for organizing common interests across regional boundaries. Faction affiliation is often a marker of social standing, and political brinkmanship is a common tool, to the point of civil violence on occasions.
