Genopolis
The capital of Dythos and its largest city.
Founding
Founded in 4E 691 as a simple watch tower to guard the fast-expanding northern frontier it became a major destination for civilians after rich minerals were found in the hills nearby. By 4E 693 a major highway between Genopolis and Irenpolis was completed and raw metal exports of high quality were routinely being shipped back to the homeland. This growth would be sustained when in 4E 833 Genopolis won favor with the crown to be named the seat of power for the newly appointed Sovereign of the Dythonian province.
By the 4E 1200's the city's population had swollen to nearly 325,000 and had also become the largest city by land size.
Districts
Unlike most large cities that have rings of walls that are built as the city sprawls Genopolis has been ruled for centuries by technocrats, architects, and planners that have painstakenly seen that every inch of space is used. Genopolis therefore only has 1 official wall, though a significant portion of the population lives outside of it. Being originally built on the peak of Mt. Genos the city is naturally defended by the mountain itself, with the wall being positioned about 1/3 of the way up the slope. Instead of the old watchtower at the peak now stands Freedom Square, a open air forum that centers the democratic government's buildings near the apex of the mountain.
On the northern quarter of the mountain just below the government district is the Fortress Lamerys, an inner citadel that is the Sovereign's seat of power and the largest arsenal for colonial militia. The fortress also houses the only entrance to the Fires of Baal, a vast natural network of caverns that act as an impregnable shelter for goods important to the sovereign. The Fires also serve as a large bunker that can house almost 50,000 people in case of attack.
