Drakontas

Drakontas is a mostly mountainous country dotted with small communities, some of them having existed for centuries, made up of close-knit family units. They became an officially unified nation at the end of the seventh age and developed a central government and national military. However, the Dragoons greatly value tradition and self-reliance, so although they have adopted some technological advances, such as better farming techniques and more efficient travel, their culture and lifestyle have remained very much the same throughout history. They farm and herd to live, but are warriors at their core. For all citizens, it is both an expectation and a privilege to serve in the Drakon military, which, while it cannot be credited for being the world's largest, is known for being the most dedicated armed force in the world.

The nation of dragoons did not re-sign the FPA revised charter for the NPSL, and is actively engaged in land grabs of the southern parts of the old Republic. Skirmishes also happen on the southern border with Touyou, but Drakontas does not have an organized front. Local tribes, however, have notoriously bad relations with nearby Tou tribes, which can break out into violence. It is currently allied with Herin, and lends mercenaries to fend off Royal forces from Al Selem. Member of the NIST.

In earlier centuries, the Dragoon military was a collection of smaller groups of tribal warriors. When the region was threatened by an outside force, each tribe was expected to be represented by as many soldiers as they could spare to help defend the region. Today, since the country is more unified than those scattered remote tribes of which it was once made up, that tradition continues at the family level rather than the tribal level. Each individual family, no matter their status or class, is expected to send at least one soldier per generation to the military. Usually this will be the oldest son, but sometimes a younger son will go in his stead. If a family produces no sons, a daughter, usually the oldest, will join. The Dragoon military is made up of a higher-than-average percentage of females for this reason. If a family does not produce any children, the male from the previous generation will be expected to extend his military career. If the family produces a child during that time, he may leave the military and send the child when he or she is of age.

The Drakontal language is very crisp, enunciated, and staccato, though not as staccato as Old Drakontal. Today, though, to a non-native speaker the language may still sound harsh, especially compared to a language such as Erihal, which is very flowing. Most words in Drakontal contain at least one hard consonant such as t, k, g, and j. Today, vowels are rarely seen in pairs except for a few surviving words from Old Drakontal still in common usage such as “sae,” which means “spear” or, as it is more commonly used today, “undefined thing.”

National schooling as well as martial training are both integral parts of every Dragoon's education. All Dragoons are required to attend National Primary school, which is usually completed by the age of ten. From there, children from lower class families tend to leave school to help with farm work at home. Middle and upper class children usually attend National Secondary school, usually completed by the age of sixteen, or may choose to go to a private school or a Military Training school, completed by anywhere between the ages of sixteen and nineteen, depending on the individual school. Whereas a few decades ago university was almost exclusively attended by the upper class, today it is common for middle class students to attend university after National Secondary school as well. A military career almost certainly follows Military Training school, and usually those students receive a higher rank upon entrance than those who attend Secondary School instead.

Martial training is considered important for all Dragoons. It is traditional for Dragoons to receive a sword at their birth, called a Birth Sword. Each Dragoon is taught the art of swordsmanship alongside their National education, sometimes starting as early as two or three years of age, but usually around five. Their martial training commonly comes from a family elder, but sometimes a trainer is hired. Many families are said to have their own secret techniques, and these techniques are considered as important to pass on as the family name is.
